PR card renewal documents

The IMM 5644 checklist says your application is returned if anything is missing. Here is the list, the slot each file goes into, and a checklist you can print.

One primary identity document

IRCC says
A copy of your valid passport or travel document, or the passport you had when you became a permanent resident, or a certificate of identity or travel document issued by IRCC or a foreign country. The copy must show the document type and number, issue and expiry dates, your name, photo and date of birth.1
You do
  • Scan the passport photo page as one PDF or JPG. Include the page stamped when you landed if you still have that passport.
  • IMM 5644: the portal's Application forms table has the official checklist PDF. Download, tick, upload. The list on this page is only your own tick list.
  • Portal slot: Passport or Other Primary ID Document.

Don't upload an expired passport when you hold a valid one. If you truly have no passport, Guide 5445 lists the statutory-declaration route; read it before uploading anything else.

Your current PR card, front and back

IRCC says
For a renewal, a copy of your current PR card.2
You do
  • Scan or photograph both sides. Combine them into one file if you can; the portal has one slot for the card.
  • Portal slot: PR Card (front and back).
  • Keep the card until the new one arrives.

Don't send the physical card. The portal only takes a copy; a mailed card is not returned before the new one ships.

Two pieces of proof you live in Canada

IRCC says
Proof that you met the residency obligation in the past five years: two supporting documents from the list in Appendix A of Guide 5445, such as employment records or pay stubs, bank statements, Canada Revenue Agency Notices of Assessment for the five years before the application, evidence of benefits from Canadian government programs, rental agreements, or club memberships.1
You do
  • Strongest first: your CRA Notices of Assessment for the last five years (download them from CRA My Account as one PDF).
  • Then one more: a lease or mortgage statement, T4 slips, pay stubs, or a letter from your employer. Bank statements work too.
  • Portal slot: Proof of Residency in Canada (upload each document as its own file).
  • If you claimed reason A, B or C for time abroad, add the documents for that situation: employer letter and T4s for A; the citizen spouse or parent's proof of citizenship and your relationship documents for B; the PR spouse or parent's employer letter and relationship documents for C.

Don't upload one document and hope. IMM 5644 asks for proof covering the five-year period; one recent pay stub does not cover it.

Only if it applies to you

IRCC says
Any document not in English or French needs an English or French translation, an affidavit from the translator if they are not a Canadian certified translator, and a certified copy of the original. Translations may not be done by you or a family member.1
You do
  • Name changed since your COPR: legal name-change document, slot Name-change legal docs.
  • Representative: IMM 5476 only if someone is acting for you; IMM 5475 only to let a person receive information. Most people upload neither.
  • Under 18: birth certificate, adoption order, guardianship document, or school records.
  • Translations: translation, translator's affidavit and certified copy, slot Translation and affidavit.
You're set. Identity document, PR card copy, two proofs of residency, photo front and back, fee receipt, and the completed IMM 5644 itself uploaded in the Application forms table.

The portal's file rules3

Every upload in the PR Portal follows the same rules. Files that break them are rejected at upload, not later.

Common questions

Do I need to upload IMM 5644 itself?
Yes. IMM 5644 is a PDF you download from the Application forms table, complete, and upload back. It is listed as mandatory on the checklist itself.
How many proofs of residency do I need?
IMM 5644 asks for proof covering the five-year period; Guide 5445 suggests two supporting documents. A Notice of Assessment for each of the five years, plus one more document, covers both readings.
Can I upload photos of documents taken with my phone?
Yes, as JPG or PNG, if every corner is visible, the text is readable and the file is under the size limit. A scanner app that outputs PDF gives cleaner results.
Do I send my passport or PR card to IRCC?
No. Online applications only take copies. Keep your originals; IRCC asks for them later only in rare cases.
