PR card renewal fee

One amount, one payment site, one receipt. The mistake that returns applications is skipping the receipt upload.

If your application is returned

IRCC refunds the fee for a returned (not refused) application automatically; allow up to 8 weeks. If you reapply before the refund arrives, you can reuse the same payment receipt; otherwise pay again. Once processing has started, or if the application is refused, the fee is not refunded.2

Pay on the separate site

IRCC says
You must pay your fees online. At the end, click the button to print the IRCC official receipt with barcode. Do not exit without printing the receipt: the printed receipt is your proof of payment.3

  • Open the IRCC payment site in a new tab, choose the PR card fee, and pay.
  • On the confirmation screen, save the receipt as a PDF (print to PDF works). Keep a second copy for yourself.
  • Check the receipt shows $50, your name and the barcode.

Don't close the payment window before saving the receipt. IRCC can resend it, but it takes days you would rather not lose.

Upload it under Proof of payment

IRCC says
Proof of payment is its own step in the portal: upload the receipt from the IRCC payment site. If the payment cannot be processed, the application is returned.4

  • Back in the portal, open Proof of payment and upload the PDF.
  • Check it is under 4 MB and that the file name uses only letters, digits, hyphen, underscore and dot.
You're set. Receipt saved, uploaded under Proof of payment, amount and name visible.

Urgent processing is a request, not a fee

There is no extra fee for urgent processing. You tick "Yes, my request is urgent" in the portal and upload proof: a ticket or itinerary, a receipt showing the date, amount and payment method, a letter explaining the urgency, and supporting evidence such as a doctor's note, a death certificate or an employer letter. Reasons IRCC lists: a job opportunity or work travel, your own serious illness, the serious illness or death of a family member, a crisis or vulnerable situation. Even with an accepted urgent request, the minimum processing time is 3 weeks and IRCC does not guarantee the date.5

Leaving Canada in less than 3 weeks without a valid card? IRCC's route is a PR travel document applied for from outside Canada, not an urgent card.

Common questions

Can I pay the PR card fee inside the PR Portal?
No. The portal has no payment step. You pay on IRCC's online payment site and upload the receipt under Proof of payment.
Is there a biometrics fee for a PR card renewal?
Renewals normally do not require biometrics, so no. IRCC tells you if biometrics are needed for your file.
Is the fee refunded if my application is returned as incomplete?
Yes. IRCC refunds a returned (not refused) application automatically, allowing up to 8 weeks. Reapply before the refund arrives and you can reuse the same receipt; otherwise pay again. Once processing starts, or if the application is refused, the fee is not refundable.
What if I paid the wrong amount?
Pay the correct $50 fee and upload that receipt. Ask IRCC for a refund of the wrong payment through its refund web form.
